Seth didn't earn his father's face

This portion opens on October 6, 2026.

An imagined scene of a very old, gray-bearded father seated on straw against a stone wall in warm evening light, smiling down at the sleeping newborn he cradles in his arms.

Yesterday we discussed the image of God.

The next time Genesis puts "image" and "likeness" together, it describes a baby.

God created humans "in Our image, after Our likeness."

Then Genesis 5 has a long list of names most of us skim.

But notice this: "When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth."

The same word The Lord used making Adam, Adam uses for his newborn son.

The image of God is like a family.

Seth is born with his father’s likeness.

We intuitively know this, when we say "She has her mother's eyes." "He laughs just like his grandpa." Nobody did that for them, it was inside them from the start.

That’s how we bear God's image. As a family resemblance.

But many of us relate to God more like servants than children.

We track our performance. We worry about being let go.

But we don’t stop looking like our parents on bad days.

Sin damaged the relationship and the image. But God confirms it's still there, even after the flood (Genesis 9:6).

Your Father stamped His image on you. You're His child.

So when you pray today, do you approach it like an employee hoping for a pay raise? Or the child who belongs to the family?
