Dads
Dad's Prayer for January 1st: Covenant
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, I do not want to start this year with big speeches. So I will just ask: feed me.
In the Bible, Your people stopped eating manna and started eating the fruit of the land You gave them. Let that be my picture. Not a miracle every morning. Just ordinary bread on a kitchen counter. A cup of coffee already made. The lunch I pack after dinner. The work that pays for it.
Teach me to receive the daily kind of food without wishing it were more exciting. If You give me a quiet year, let me not despise it. If You give me a hard one, let me not pretend it is more than it is.
Keep me at the table. Keep me grateful. Keep me honest with the people You set across from me.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
