Dad's Prayer for January 9th

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, my oldest is asleep, my youngest is asleep, my wife is asleep, and I am awake with a low hum of worry that has no name. You said You will be their God. Not might be. Will be. So I lay each one down again, in Your hands instead of mine. My daughter, who needs more than I know how to give. My son, who will face things I cannot predict. My wife, who carries weight I do not always see. Be their God in the rooms I cannot enter. Be their God in the conversations I will not be there for. I will keep doing my part. But I refuse to play God in the dark with people who already belong to You. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
