A Dad's Prayer for March 22nd: Obedience

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, even Your Son went a little farther in the garden of Gethsemane. He fell on His face and prayed through the agony He endured for me that night. But I keep stopping short. I pray for two minutes and call it good. I take the hard conversation right up to the edge of change and then change the subject. I confess the easy sin and skip the sins that really cost me. Help me go a little farther today, Lord. Not all the way to what Christ went through for me, but just a little farther than I would go on my own. Five more minutes in prayer. One more honest sentence with the person I love most. One more name added to my prayer list. Christ went farther for me. I can go a little farther for the people You have given me. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
    Matthew 26:39
  2. Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
    Luke 22:44
  3. He said, “Abba,14:36 Abba is a Greek spelling for the Aramaic word for “Father” or “Daddy” used in a familiar, respectful, and loving way. Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
    Mark 14:36
