Dads
Dad's Prayer for August 9th
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, there is a city coming that does not need the sun. I am not like that city. I need a lot of things. I need the AC to work. I need the savings to hold. I need my health. I need my kids to be okay. I need my marriage to be good.
You do not ask me to hate these good things. You ask me not to mix them up with You. When some of these things shake, what still holds is You. Not the things I leaned on next to You.
Teach me this now, while most things are fine. Let me thank You for the AC without making it my god. Let me thank You for the paycheck without making it my safety. Let me thank You for my wife without placing her in the place only You should fill.
Lord Jesus, You are the light that stays on when the power goes out. Hold me in that light. Let me hold everything else with open hands.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
