Dad's Prayer for September 4th

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in Mark 1:41, Jesus saw a leper and was moved with compassion. He reached out and touched him. He did not have to. He chose to. The touch was the message.

I have been cautious lately. Careful about getting too close to messy people. Careful about my friend going through a divorce. Careful about the family at church whose kid is in trouble. Some caution makes sense. But sometimes I just stay away when I should move closer.

Soften me where I have gone careful. Move me with compassion, even a little, toward one person this week who is being kept at arm's length by everyone, including me. Let me make contact — a phone call, a meal, a presence.

Lord Jesus, You touched the untouchable. Help me do the same in some small way. Give me the courage to get close when every instinct says to pull back.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Being moved with compassion, he stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said to him, “I want to. Be made clean.”
    Mark 1:41
