Dad's Prayer for November 13th

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, John 15:4 says, abide in Me, and I in You. Abide is a slow, quiet, simple word. Not work hard at Me. Not sprint toward Me. Stay. Sit. Remain.

I am bad at abiding. I am better at striving. Sit still in Christ for five minutes, and I will check my phone twice. I keep skipping the staying because there is nothing to show for it when it is done.

Train me toward it. Two minutes today of staying in Your presence without going anywhere. Not asking for things, not listing my worries, not even praying about other people. Just sitting in You. Let that be enough as a starting place.

Lord Jesus, You are the vine. Apart from You, I can do nothing. Help me practice the quiet act that does not look like anything from the outside — the slow, small, unseen work of staying close.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
    John 15:4
