Grandmother’s Prayer for January 25th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Samuel's words have stayed with me in this kitchen this morning. He said it would be a sin to stop praying for God's people. I know that sin. I have let names slip off my list. Not on purpose. Just by drift. Just by slow forgetting. The names that should be on my lips when I wake up are not always there. I am not angry at myself. I am just honest. Some names I stopped praying because I was afraid. Afraid the hurt would go on too long. Afraid nothing would change. Some names I stopped praying for because I quietly gave up on them. I will not make excuses. Samuel did not soften the word, and I will not either. It was a sin to stop. So I am starting again. I name them quietly now, one by one. I put the list back into Your hands, where it should have stayed all along. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

  1. Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Yahweh in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
