Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for February 21st
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Your word says that Abraham and Sarah and the rest died in faith. They did not receive the promises in their lifetimes. But they saw the promises from far off. They were sure of them. They held on to them. They said out loud that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Hebrews 11:13.
I am old enough now to say the same things without feeling cheated. Some of the promises I have prayed about for forty years have not come into view yet. I do not expect to see all of them on this side. But I see them from far off, the way they did. I am sure of them. I have held on to them.
I confess, as an old woman sitting alone in a quiet kitchen, that I have been a stranger and a pilgrim on this earth. The earth was not home. The road has been long. The end is closer than it was. The city is real, even though I cannot see its walls from here. And the One who prepared it is the same One who has been walking the road with me.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
