Grandmother’s Prayer for February 26th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You are the good shepherd. You know me, and I know You. That knowing is not far off or fuzzy. You know my voice, the way a shepherd in the East knew his own flock from a hundred others. I know Your voice too, after years of reading the Gospels, praying through the Psalms, and listening in church. The older I get, the more clearly I hear You. I read a verse and recognize the voice that has been speaking to me my whole life. Speak this morning. Let me recognize You. Let me follow. The noise of the radio, the news, and the busy world has nothing on Your voice for someone who has been listening a long time. Lead me out today to the small pasture You have arranged. The grass will be enough. The water will be enough. You are enough. I am known, and I know You. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
