Grandmother’s Prayer for April 20th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, it is the Lord.

John said those words when he saw Jesus on the shore. The disciples had been fishing all night. Then Jesus was there with breakfast waiting. They knew it was Him.

I know You the same way. Not by big signs. By the quiet things.

By the verse that lands just right in the morning. By the phone call that comes at the right time. By the small steady mercies of an ordinary day.

The shore in my life is the kitchen. You are here the way You were in Galilee that morning, with breakfast ready and a quiet welcome for tired people.

Let me say John's three words today when I see You. Not loudly. Just under my breath.

The doctor was kind, and it was the Lord. The right word came on the phone, and it was the Lord. The morning reading surprised me, and it was the Lord.

Let me see You. Let me be glad. Let me say so.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
