Grandmother’s Prayer for April 28th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says to sing a new song to You. Psalm 96:1. I am not a songwriter. I never was. But the new song an old woman can sing is a quiet one. It is the praise I offer in this kitchen this morning, standing over the kettle. It is the “thank You” under my breath when the right word comes to mind in a hard conversation. It is one line of an old hymn I find myself humming while I do the dishes. None of those are new because they were just written. They are new because I am singing them today, in a moment that has never existed before. Your mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23. And the songs about them can be new too, even when the words have been around for a long time. Let me sing today. In my heart, mostly. Out loud, a little, when no one else is near. To You, all of it. Let the song be small. Let it be glad. Let it be Yours. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
