Grandmother’s Prayer for May 20th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your word says the world keeps going by Your rule. The sun rises. The seasons change. You hold it all together. And You hold my small life together too. My breathing. My walking. My thinking. My praying. All of it is in Your hands today. Help me serve You with a calm heart, knowing all of creation is in Your care. The cardinal at my feeder is part of Your world. The kettle on my stove is part of my day. The friend who will call this afternoon is someone You love. Let me see my ordinary work as service to You. I am not here by accident. I am here because You placed me here. Let me take my place without asking for a different one. A servant's life is a satisfied life when she knows whose servant she is. I know whose. I serve gladly. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
