Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for July 7th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Paul was an apostle, yet he still asked the church to pray for him. That humbles me. I am old enough to know I never outgrow needing prayer, and neither does anyone else. I have let prayers drop over the years. There are names I promised to carry that I no longer remember to lift up. There are hard people on my old list. The family member who fought over money. The neighbor who wronged me. The church leader I once thought was doing it all wrong. Bring those names back to me. Some of them are still alive. Some are with You. Either way, help me pray for them instead of holding on to my hurt. Make my praying honest, not fake. I do not have to feel warm toward someone to ask You to do them good. My will can move before my feelings do. Today, let me put back on my prayer list one person I stopped praying for because I did not like them. Carry them. Carry me as I carry them. Keep me faithful a little longer. This work is not too heavy when You are holding the other end. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
