Grandmother’s Prayer for July 11th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says that after I have suffered awhile, You will settle me. That word catches me at this age. I have wanted to be settled my whole life.

The while has stretched over decades for me — through lean years, through long illness, through the slow loss of people I love. I am still being settled. The work is still going on.

Lord, settle me a little more today. Settle the heart that still flutters at the thought of what comes next. Settle the mind that still turns over old hurts when the house is quiet. Settle the body into the rhythm of this ordinary day, with nothing on the calendar but a phone call and a nap.

You are the One who does it. Not me. Not anyone else. You.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. But may the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
    1 Peter 5:10
