Grandmother’s Prayer for August 3rd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, Your word says the city of God will need no sun or moon because the Lamb is its light. My own eyes have been dimmer this year. The change is slow, but it is real. This morning, that verse caught me in a new way. The city ahead does not need eyes like the ones I am losing. You Yourself will be the light there. I have spent a lot of time worrying about the eye doctor and what the tests will show. This verse does not take those worries away. But it gives me a horizon to look toward. The dimming here is not the end of the story. The eyes that are failing now will not be the eyes that see You. New eyes, made for Your light, are waiting. Help me hold the practical and the eternal together today. I will still go to the appointment. I will still use the magnifier on the Bible. I will still ask someone to read the small print on the insurance letter. None of that is silly, because the eternal is real. But the failing of these eyes is no longer the worst news. It is a slow reminder that better light is on the way. Make me peaceful about the dimming. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
