Grandmother’s Prayer for August 9th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in this small apartment, my light is electric. The lamp by my chair. The little bulb in the kitchen. The flashlight by the bed for when I get up at night. Every one of them depends on a wire, a bulb, a circuit, and a bill paid. Most days, I do not think about how fragile that is.

But You showed me a city that needs no sun and no moon. The Lamb is its light. That light was never made. It never burns out. It never fails.

Lord Jesus, that is a hope I can hold on to when this body gets weak and the lights here go out. They will go out. But the light You are taking me to is not on a wire. It does not depend on a bill or a bulb. It depends on You.

Steady the part of me that worries about the dark here. I do not have to be brave about the dimming because the brightness ahead is Yours. Anchor my old age to the next city's light, not to the wiring in this one.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
