Grandmother’s Prayer for August 18th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the church I have loved has changed. The pews are emptier. The hymns are different. The pastor is half my age. The grief is real, and I do not want to pretend it is not. But this is not the last word. You are still faithful to whatever You are doing now, even when I do not recognize it. Keep me from becoming someone who only mourns what used to be. Help me stay rooted to the gospel I learned, not just the room where I learned it. Help me bless the one who leads us now. Help me pray for the people who are here, not the ones who used to fill these seats. The sanctuary You are building right now may not look like the one I would choose. Keep me at it anyway. Amen.

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
