Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for September 2nd
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Lord Jesus, in Mark 1:30, Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. Someone told You about her. You came. You took her by the hand, and the fever left her. She got up and served. Father, that small scene has carried me through every sickbed I have known. You did not pass her by because her need was ordinary. You walked over and took her hand. Lord Jesus, I have had my share of small fevers and slow recoveries this year. I have a friend in the hospital this week. I have an aunt in hospice across town. There is no sickbed too small for You to come to. Take my friend's hand. Take my aunt's hand. Take the hands of every woman on my prayer list whose name You know. Be at each bedside. Let Your presence make that place holy. And if You will, let them get up and serve a little while longer, the way Simon's mother-in-law did. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
