Grandmother’s Prayer for September 12th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Your Word says You are jealous. That word used to scare me when I was young. I know what jealousy looks like between people. It is small and ugly. But that is not what You mean. Your jealousy means Your love will not share me. You will not let me keep other gods beside You.
Lord, the other gods at my age are not the big ones. Not money. Not fame. The other gods are quiet. Comfort. Routine. The chair I sit in every morning. The way I think things should be done. The fear of what comes next. The need to be needed by my family. You are jealous of those things. You want me whole. You want me Yours.
That is good news, Lord. It means You take this seriously. A careless God would let me keep my little gods on the side. But You are not careless. You said: “I am the Lord. That is My name. My glory I will not give to another.”
Be jealous for me today. Pull me away from the small things I put in Your place. Be the only one I serve.
Amen.
