Grandmother’s Prayer for October 14th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, at my age, the losses are not pretend. The career is gone. The house we raised the kids in is gone. The husband is gone. The strong body is going. None of these was nothing. They were good gifts. But what I have gained in Christ is greater than all of it. Lord Jesus, the years with Walter were sweet. The years walking with You are sweeter still. The home we made was warm. The home You are preparing is warmer still. The strong body served me well. The resurrection body will serve me better. The losses are real. But You are more real. Walk me through this Sunday with that truth in mind, and let the loss be carried lightly. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Yes most certainly, and I count all things to be a loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them nothing but refuse, that I may gain Christ
    Philippians 3:8
