Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for October 19th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, I have been a believer for sixty-some years, and there are still days I am a babe in some areas. The patience with my middle son's marriage. The trust about my own remaining years. The forgiveness for the woman in the choir who has been cool to me since 2017. In each of those, I am still small. Still learning. Still being fed milk on questions where I thought I had moved on to meat. Lord, this is a humbling word to hear at seventy-six. I prefer to think I have grown up over the years. But the truth is, there are corners where I am still a babe, and pretending otherwise will not help me grow. Treat me as a babe in those corners today. Feed me what I need, not what I think I need. Be patient with me, the way I have learned to be patient with the great-grandchildren when they are slow to understand something small. Make me willing to remain a learner in my old age. Amen.

- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
