Grandmother’s Prayer for November 1st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says the church met in Philemon's house. Not in a building. Just people around a table. That is my life too. Over the years, this apartment has held a Bible study around my coffee table, a prayer breakfast that ran for years, and the women's group I still host on Thursdays. Those small gatherings were church in their own way. The big building down the road is church. So is the table in the corner of my living room. Lord, today, let me honorably hold the small gatherings . The Thursday group is coming this week. Three women. Mostly older. We will read a psalm together, pray for each other's grandchildren, and have tea. It will not look impressive from the outside. But You say it is the church in this house. Make me a good host for that gathering. Let the conversation be honest. Let the prayer be specific. Let one of the women leave a little lighter than she came. The church in this house is still functioning. Keep it open. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
