Grandmothers Prayer for November 16th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the Lord is my portion. That is what my soul says.

This has been my verse through every loss. Through the widowhood. Through the friends I have buried. Through the strength that has left my body. When much is taken, what remains is still You. And You are enough.

You are my portion. Not Walter — he is with You. Not the children — they are their own people now. Not this body — it has carried me a long way and is getting tired. Not the country — that is in Your hands, not mine. The portion that remains is You.

Lord, today let me say what my soul says, out loud, in this kitchen. The Lord is my portion.

Walk me through Wednesday from inside that portion. Eat from it. Rest in it. Pray out of it.

The Lord is my portion, says my soul. That is the steady fact of an old believer's life.

Amen.
