New Mothers Prayer for January 17th

A short, Scripture-shaped new mothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, John saw a Lamb. Not a Lion. A Lamb.

Tonight I am too tired for any picture of You that asks me to pull myself together. I cannot meet a Lion right now. But a Lamb I can sit with. A Lamb who was small once. A Lamb who was carried.

Christ, You took on a body small enough to be held. You know what it is to need feeding, to need warmth, to depend on someone else for everything.

I do not have to be impressive to come to You. I can come the way my baby comes to me, with nothing in her hands except need.

Let me come to You that way tonight. No performance. Just nearness.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
