Temptation Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped theme prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says no temptation has come to me that is not common to everyone. You are faithful. You will not let me face more than I can bear. You always provide a way out.

I have looked at my temptations as if I were the first person to ever face them. That is pride, and it is not true. These struggles are old. You have helped Your people through the same kinds of trials for thousands of years. The way of escape is promised to me, too.

Show me where it is in this trial. Sometimes it is a phone call to a friend. Sometimes it is leaving the room. Sometimes it is the old advice — run, do not stay, do not linger. Make me someone who walks through the door You have opened instead of testing how far the trap will go.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
    1 Corinthians 10:13
